  5. The enclosed files constitute the SIL Encore IPA Fonts.
  6. They are in both TrueType and PostScript Type 1 formats. Please read
  7. the provided electronic documentation for more specific information on the
  8. fonts.
  9.  
  10. The Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) is an organization of
  11. linguists dedicated to the study and promotion of the thousands of
  12. minority languages around the world. The Printing Arts Department
  13. serves SIL by developing products to assist in the publication of
  14. linguistic texts.
  15.  
  16. We are happy to make these IPA fonts available to the general
  17. linguistic community at no charge. More SIL fonts, containing a much
  18. richer phonetic character set (930+ characters) can be obtained at a
  19. reasonable cost by using the order form provided in the electronic
  20. documentation.

  22. You may (and are encouraged to) share these fonts with your friends
  23. and co-workers, but with the following restrictions:
  24.  
  25.     * All files must be copied together, including this one.
  26.     * No fee may be charged for the fonts
  27.  
  28. Even though these fonts are "free", SIL retains all copyright and
  29. ownership of the included fonts and reserves the right to restrict
  30. their use and distribution at any time. They may not be used as a
  31. basis for other fonts. They may be placed on bulletin boards, etc.
  32. but cannot be included in (or bundled with) any commercial product
  33. including hard disks or CD-ROMs without specific written permission.

  42.           ATTENTION POSTSCRIPT USERS WHO ARE UPGRADING
  43.           FROM VERSION 1.0 (SIL Premier IPA Fonts):
  44.  
  45. If you have been using the PostScript fonts from an earlier version of the
  46. SIL Premier/Encore IPA Fonts you should be sure to de-install those fonts
  47. (using the ATM Control Panel) before installing the new fonts. If you only
  48. use TrueType, the provided installation program will automatically remove
  49. the older fonts from your system before installing the new ones.

  52.           INSTALLING IN WINDOWS
  53.  
  54. The SIL IPA Fonts 1.2 come with a utility to automatically install the
  55. TrueType fonts and documentation in Microsoft Windows. There are two
  56. methods you may use to run it from File Manager.
  57.

  59. Do NOT attempt to run INSTALL from the DOS command line. INSTALL is a
  60. Windows program; it will not run under DOS.
  61.

  63. Method 1:
  64.  
  65. Select the drive icon where you have placed the SIL Encore IPA Fonts disk
  66. or the files downloaded from an on-line service. Find INSTALL.EXE in the
  67. directory window and double-click on it.

  70. Method 2:
  71.  
  72. Select File; Run from the menu bar. At the prompt, enter the drive letter
  73. containing the font installation diskette, followed by a colon and
  74. backslash and the word INSTALL.
  75.  
  76. Example:  A:\INSTALL
  77.  
  78. In this case, the fonts are being installed from drive A.
  79.  
  80. If you downloaded the fonts from Internet or CompuServe or another on-line
  81. service, enter the drive:\directory where you placed the files.
  82.  
  83. Example:  C:\DOWNLOAD\INSTALL
  84.  
  85. In this case, the files were placed in the \DOWNLOAD directory on drive C.
  86. (Enter the actual drive and directory where you placed your files.)

  89. Note that INSTALL will automatically install TrueType fonts. It will NOT
  90. install PostScript fonts. If you are using PostScript fonts, you will need
  91. to uninstall them first and either remove the files from your hard drive
  92. or else plan on installing the new font files to a different directory.

  95. INSTALL will copy the documentation and the COMPOSE utility files to your
  96. hard drive as well. If you wish, it will also create Program Manager items
  97. enabling you to directly view the IPAFONTS.HLP and IPACHARS.WRI files.

  100. When running INSTALL, you will be given the opportunity to select what you
  101. want to install. The default is to install everything and use TrueType fonts.
  102. You may change this if you wish. Additionally, you may opt to install Fonts,
  103. Utilities (COMPOSE files), and Documentation in different directories. Just
  104. follow the instructions and respond to the dialog boxes. If you are uncertain
  105. about something, click on the HELP button.

  108. INSTALL will automatically terminate when finished, with either a message
  109. stating that the fonts were successfully installed or that there was an
  110. error. If there was an error, you will get a message before exiting
  111. informing you of what went wrong.

  114.           CHANGES FOR VERSION 1.2
  115.  
  116. ***Linking Character***
  117.  
  118. Character 237 in the original (1.0) IPA fonts was a non-spacing diacritic.
  119. This really should have been a spacing character. Although the IPA calls
  120. that character a "Bottom Tie Bar" (analogous to the Top one in code 131),
  121. it signifies "Linking (absence of a break)" and is used to link two sounds
  122. that are written with a space between them. Hence, these fonts have 237 as
  123. a spacing character.

  126. ***Doulos Character Spacing***
  127.  
  128. After a number of comments from users, we have "relaxed" the spacing of the
  129. SILDoulosIPA font to conform to that of the SILDoulos fonts in the SIL Encore
  130. Fonts. This means that there will be more spacing between the characters,
  131. making the text easier to read. This also means that texts set in the original
  132. SILDoulosIPA will have different line breaks if opened on a computer with the
  133. new SILDoulosIPA. If you have a strong reason to retain the original spacing,
  134. do not install this new font. We do however recommend that you use this new
  135. font.

  138. ***Sophia Dieresis***
  139.  
  140. The three dieresis characters (45, 95, 208) in the SILSophiaIPA font now have
  141. dots spaced further apart.
  142.

  144. ***Manuscript Space Width***
  145.  
  146. The space character in the SILManuscriptIPA font is now (reliably) equal in
  147. width to the other characters.
